This amazing sports rant happened 10 years ago when Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers was asked about Practice...
As worship leaders, people that hold practice often, is Practice important?
"We talkin' about practice right now..." "We not even talkin about the game, the actual game - when it actually matters."
Sure the game, in our case the worship service, is the moment we want everything to come together for some distraction free worship - but we would be in error to think only that time is the only time that matters.
Worship doesn't simply start as our countdown video hits double zeroes... For our team worship has started long before as we prepare ourselves musically and spiritually. Worship continues as we come together to practice as a team. We worship God in practice. We as worship leaders need to be aware of this and cast that vision to our team.
"How the hell can I make my teammates better by practicing?!"
Seriously?! Listen Allen Iverson was an amazing NBA talent, but as we know all to well - it takes more than talent.
Our worship teams need to honor HEART above TALENT!
Don't make light of practice. Showing up prepared is no small thing! Being on time is a huge deal. The people that do this are showing heart - the people that don't are relying on talent. They don't fit into a team construct very well.
- As a worship leader we make over our team for playing a good service... do we make over them for a good practice session?
- Do you see the importance of practice? Does your team?
