Newsflash! You will have problems! No... seriously! Get ready.
I don't care who you are, you will have problems. You aren't smart enough to avoid them all, you are not lucky or blessed enough to sidestep every one, and you aren't a good enough leader to make problems a thing of the past.
"In this world you will have Trouble." Who said that? Uhh... Jesus. Ever heard of him? This world is full of problems and you are not exempt from the experience.
I've talked about problem solving before... 3 steps to solve your problem But today I want to talk about the traits of a problem solver.
It's a special person that spots a problem and then solves it. Here are some traits that make problem solvers so special.
Positive Attitude
Focuses on what we "CAN DO" when most focus on what they "CAN'T DO." A great problem solver brings optimism and energy.
Invested with a sense of Responsibility
Anyone can spot a problem... a problem solver is invested enough to give the effort it takes to find the solution. Many people will see the problem, but will expect someone else to solve it. A problem solver sees that problem as their responsibility and won't simply pass that problem along to others.
Intellectually Curious, Skeptical, and Honest
They realize that many problems are caused by the incorrect perceptions of people, so they ask Questions! They look skeptically at the information and respond with honesty.
Open Minded and Creative
They are receptive to different views. They will explore many different avenues to reach the best solution. A Problem Solver always seems to see more. When others see just a paper clip and a rubber band, the Problem solver is ready to reenact an old MacGyver episode...
Unafraid of failure
They understand the value of Trial and Error. They treat the situation with the parameters that the only unacceptable action is INACTION. They are willing to fail and learn from their mistakes in order to come closer to a solution.
They seek input
They are NOT Lone Rangers! They desire ideas from others. They don't act like they are the smartest person in the room. They value a team effort.
They understand the creative process
A major mistake often made is analyzing and evaluating as you create. It's Idea abortion. Before the Idea is fully conceived it is being terminated by hasty analysis. A great Problem Solver will understand the creative process. They know when to move from conception to analysis, and to implementation.
