This last Sunday we used The Cross in Worship. This was something I had never been a part of, but it won't be the last.
As you know, we had our creative worship service LOVE ILLUSTRATED. We had Special Cards made and placed on every chair with a pen. On the cards were instructions.. Basically...
- During this service write your message to God. Declare your dependence, thankfulness, love, and even prayer.. etc on this card. Place this card on the Cross during the song "We don't need anything but you" and make it part of your worship. -
We weren't sure the response we would get from our congregation; we had never done something like this before. HELLO RISK!
We placed the cross out at a specific time and had a simple white Par Can lighting it up. As we worshiped, person after person left their chairs (The Comfort Zone) and brought those cards to the Cross and punched them through pre-nailed nails. Some even hung around the cross and worshiped.
Don't just sing to your church...
Design a service where tall can DEMONSTRATE their feelings for God in new ways. What people wrote on those cards and placed on His cross was an Illustration of their Love.
As Worship Leaders we decide the set list...
The Lyrics, The Words used in that Worship service are largely decided by us...
There ought to be a moment in every service that our congregation expresses their own words, their own thoughts, their own heart to God.

To often... we only express the thoughts of the songwriter...
We learned a lot this past Sunday. We will be doing this again and seeking different variations on the idea. We are seeking to design creative elements that encourage personal self-expression towards God.
Throw in your 2 Cents
- You know of any variations on the Cross Element?
- How can we encourage our Congregation to really express their heart to God in our Worship Services?
