3 ways everyone wants to be treated.

The following is something I gleaned from Social Style/Management Style - By Robert and Dorothy Bolton.

Do you know how the people you lead want to be treated? The people you lead, like all people, want to be treated the 3 following ways.

Honestly
Ok. Simple enough… People hate being lied to… next point…

Hold on!  Not so fast. Take some time to assess honesty beyond white and black and think about the grey areas. We think ourselves honest… but how often do we with-hold feedback when someone asks for it? Is that really honest? Maybe we don’t out and out lie, but are we less than straightforward? Are we manipulative? Do we distort the truth? We don’t like to be treated this way.

Fairly
They want to see consistency.  If they see you treat someone else on the team differently than others it raises questions of fairness.

How do you respond to disagreements or new ideas? Do you give them a fair consideration? Do people walk away from the disagreement feeling like they have been heard and treated fairly?

With Respect
Treating people with Respect requires 2 components.
Acceptance
We are all different. We can punish each other for our differences or we can accept them. When we show acceptance to one another it frees us to be ourselves.
Courtesy
Do NOT talk down to others. Do NOT forget the simple rules of politeness. Say thank you, listen to others, ask nicely, respond graciously.  Sometimes when the pressure mounts we forget courtesy.

The average person doesn’t want to be treated special or with importance. The requirements are very basic and common. We should RARELY have conflict with others because of our treatment with them. If you haven’t been treating people as you should, let’s make a change today.

  • What have you learned about how people want to be treated, as you've tried to lead?
  • What's your biggest struggle in this area?
  • Anything to add?
