Let's start here. I like Mark Driscoll. I subscribe to his podcast. I like his down to earth delivery and think he has great things to say...
This however isn't one of those great things he has to say...
Mark posted this on his facebook a few days ago. His account blew up and he took it down...
I think he thought it would be funny. It wasn't. But also... this is more than a joke. This is a stereotype of male worship leaders... A stereotype Mark has vocalized at least one other time...
"I’ll be happy when we have more than just prom songs to Jesus sung by some effeminate guy on an acoustic guitar offered as mainstream worship music." - Mark Driscoll Relevant Magazine back in 2007.
I find this attack really bothersome. I have grown up hearing this stereotype of the limp wristed, sissy, gay worship leader. It's destructive, hateful, and a witch hunt.
Let's end here. I don't wish Mark any ill. He loves Jesus and is impacting people in Seattle and beyond. Praise God for that and may he have continued success. BUT let's stop it with the Worship Leader put downs.
In fact can we stop it with attacks against our own body!? Stop attacking other churches, ministries, pastors, worship leaders... That's an attack on the Body of Christ and it's STOOPID!
What do you think?
Have you ever been exposed to a Negative Stereotype in ministry?
