360 worship nerd |
This time around we are building AUGMENTED and DIMINISHED triads. So get your theory nerd glasses pushed up!
"What's up with these chords? I've not really heard of them. They aren't worth studying. All you need is miner and majur chords" - Guy who was not a good musician.
Seriously! Be a student of music! Learn everything you can. Every scale, every chord, every time signature, key signature, every music term... be a lifetime student!
...climbs off of soap box. Now about these triads...
To Augment means to enlarge and to diminish means to make smaller. The augmented chord will expand and the diminished chord will condense.
By the Numbers (of the major scale)
Augmented - 1 3 #5
Diminished - 1 b3 b5

Let's figure out a C Augmented chord.
The C Scale
C D E F G A B C
C is the 1
E is the 3
G is the 5... but we need a #5. So we need a G#!
C Augmented is spelled - CEG#
The chord symbol is usually - C+ , but you could also run across C(#5) or Caug.
G+ = G B D#
Let's Figure out an A Diminished chord.
The A scale
A B C# D E F# G# A
A is the 1
C# is the 3... but we need a b3. So we need a C
E is the 5... but we need a b5. So we need an Eb
A Diminished is spelled - A C Eb
The Chord symbol is usually - A° (Yes that little circle thing is suppose to be there!) You might also run across Adim.
F#° = F# A C.
TAKE A MOMENT TO THINK MUSIC!
Challenge Yourself! Go around the circle of 5ths building Major, Minor, Augmented, and Diminished triads! In fact... time yourself and see how you did. I'll post answers tomorrow so you can check your work.
Major is 1 3 5
Minor is 1 b3 5
Augmented is 1 3 #5
Diminished is 1 b3 b5
I'd love to know how your THINK MUSIC challenge goes.
I'd also love to hear any of your music theory questions.
