THINK MUSIC!

During the day at random times I like to challenge myself musically.  I like to think about music theory and press myself to think at a constantly faster pace.

Behold the Great Circle!!
I'm standing in line at the bank... I put away my iphone game apps and challenge myself to go around the circle of fifths as quick as I can.

C G D A E (B/Cb) (F#/Gb) (C#/Db) Ab Eb Bb F C

Next lets go backwards... (The circle of 5ths backwards is the Circle of 4ths!)

C F Bb Eb Ab (Db/C#) (Gb/F#) (B/Cb) E A D G C

"Why would you do this?"  Well without going into a long boring talk about synapse within your brain... Let's just say it makes me faster at "Thinking Music."  If I think music faster I will end up playing faster/better and with more intelligence.

Get Your Neurons Connecting!
Quick!  Spell Triads going around the circle of fifths.

CEG, GBD, DF#A, AC#E, EG#B, BD#F#, F#A#C#, DbFAb, AbCEb, EbGBb, BbDF, FAC, CEG

If the only time we think music is when we are touching our guitars, keyboards, or microphones, then we are spending more time developing muscle memory than a musical mind.  Your hands or voice will never be faster than your mind.  Your mind controls everything!

Here a few more of my drills I use to challenge and shock my mind into Thinking Music.

Spell the major scale. (Jump a 4ths or 5th)

Choose a song that you know the chord changes... Now transpose it into ever Key. Make it more difficult by jumping keys by 4ths or 5ths.

Spell chords past the triad into their extensions. 7 9 #11 13! (Jump by 4ths and 5ths!!)
Now try singing those notes!  Ear Training!!

Listening to music in the car or on your mp3 player? Try charting the chord changes in your head.
Go Forth and Study Thy Music Theory!

Challenge yourself and your band to think Music and not just play it!
