When the Spirit moves...

You've come up with a set list. You've planned for a day that will minister spiritual transformation. You have scheduled your team and rehearsed and programmed all the media and lyrics.

It's great to be prepared to minister. You better believe that it honors God... but what do you do when the Spirit moves?

"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." - John 3:8

Jesus compares the Spirit to the Wind. It's hard to plan for the wind, because you don't know where it came from or where it is going to go... it blows wherever it pleases.

So... What do you do when the Spirit moves?

This is a complex question... here are just a few things to think about.

  • What is the Spirit saying? What is the Spirit doing?
This takes some spiritual maturity and growth. As followers of Christ we should recognize a move of God's Spirit and understand what we should do.

  • Does your leadership trust you to follow after the Spirit?

This is an important question. If you aren't sure then you should have a very specific talk with your leadership.

  • It is ok to break from the plan.
If you think you might ought to break from the plan... you probably ought to...  Maybe in rehearsing our teams we make provisions or a plan B.  Perhaps there are particular worship songs your team needs to be able to play at a moments notice.

*It would be awesome to know what some of those songs would be!
For me - How great is our God, All who are thirsty, Our God, Lord I give you me.  These are 4 songs that can fit almost any situation.

  • Could it be that the Spirit wants us to be quiet?
Maybe you don't need another song to play... Maybe God is directing us to repentance, prayer for our world, to simply listen...  Don't be afraid of silence.  You as the worship leader are the perfect one to direct the congregation in this... So it would make since if God is talking to you about it.

Finally... The Spirit is always moving... ALWAYS.  We are just sometimes more aware than others.  Don't be shocked when the Spirit moves... expect it!

  • Tell us about a time the Spirit moved... How did you lead?
  • What are some great songs for a Plan B Spirit move?
