It's important that a Musician understands how to Negotiate the twists and turns of Sheet Music. We have talked about Sheet Music Notation before... Today we are going to go a little deeper into sheet music terms...
D.C. (Da Capo)
This tells the Performer to return to the beginning and continue playing. You see this in popular music often... Song starts Intro, Verse 1, Chorus... {D.C.} Intro, Verse 2, Chorus. Using that DC saves a lot of space on your sheet music.
There is also 2 D.C. variations a "D.C. al coda" and "D.C. al fine." This fairly simple...
D.C. Al Coda - Upon playing the DC back at the top of the chart look to take the Coda (the coda is explained below).
D.C. Al Fine - Upon playing the DC back at the top of the chart simply play the chart out till the End. (Fine means Finish/End in Italian)
D.S. (Dal Segno)
Tells the Performer to continue playing the music starting at the nearest sign/segno. This is a partial repeat, where as the DC is a complete repeat from the top of the chart.
There are also 2 variations of the D.S. al coda and al fine.
D.S. Al Coda - Upon jumping back to the Sign/Segno look to take the coda.
D.S. Al Fine - Upon jumping back to the Sign/Segno simply play the chart out til the end.
Sign (Segno)
Mark used with D.S./dal segno.
Coda
Indicates a forward jump in the music. The Coda should only used after playing through a D.S. al coda or D.C. al coda.
A tip - Before playing a chart take a moment to identify the form. Identify any d.c., d.s., signs or codas. Take note to the location of those jumps. This will help you on the sight read.
